Set in an alternate history Edo period where humanity was conquered by aliens known as 'Amanto', Gintama follows the life of Gintoki Sakata, an eccentric, sweets-loving former samurai who now works as an odd-jobs freelancer to pay the rent. He is soon joined by Shinpachi Shimura, a teenager trying to save his family's dojo, and Kagura, a super-strong alien girl from the deadly Yato tribe. Together, they form the 'Yorozuya' and take on bizarre requests that frequently drag them into hilarious misadventures and deadly conflicts involving the Shinsengumi police force, rebel factions, and dangerous space criminals. Gintama is widely considered one of the greatest comedy manga ever created, famous for its sharp parodies of other Shonen Jump series, meta-humor, and gag-filled episodic chapters. However, beneath the comedy lies an incredibly epic, deeply emotional underlying narrative filled with breathtaking sword fights, profound character development, and tragedies stemming from the Joui War.
